systematic reviews (meta analysis)

-comprehensive review of medical literature using explicit methods to summarize all literature


-meta analysis uses stats to estimate the effect size of the results of several RCT's to minimize the problem of small sample sizes bc they are pooled together

RCT

-experimental research used to assess the effectiveness of an intervention compared to a control group


-groups are randomized & relatively equal

cohort studies

-longitudinal observational study where people are followed over time to assess occurrence in the "exposed" group compared to non exposed


-can be prospective or retrospective using historical records


-takes a long time

case control

-retrospective study that compares those that have the disease to those that don't

cross sectional

=observational study that's made at only one point in time & all subjects are tested at relatively the same time


-purpose is to describe relationships btwn a disease & condition in a population at a certain time
