What type of muscle are the extraocular muscles?
They are striated muscle which has a denser blood supply and a more delicated connective tissue sheath than skeletal muscle.
What is the name of the unique receptor for proprioception to extraocular muscles?
Myotendinous Cylinder (Palisade ending)
What is a movement involving just one eye?
Ductions:

Adduction
Abduction
Which are rotation around Fick's Z axis

Supraduction
Infraduction
Which are rotations around Fick's X axis.

In contrast Torsional movements are incyclorotation or excycloration and those are around Fick's Y axis.
What is the difference b/w vergences and versions?
Vergence movements are when the eyes move in opposite left-right directions: Like convergence and divergence: dysjunctive eye movements.

versions are when the eyes move in the same direction. These are termed dextroversion, levoversion, supraversion, and infraversion these are all conjunctive eye movements
What is the longest EOM? And which is the shortest?
The Superior Oblique has the longest tendon length and the Medial Rectus is the shortest.
What is the name of the area in which the rectus muscles originate?
The Annulus of Zinn or common tendinous ring
What two muscles attach to the sheath of the optic nerve?
Medial Rectus

Superior Rectus
What is the area in the center of the Annulus of Zinn refered to?
The oculomotor foramen
What is the spiral of tillaux?
It is the line that connects the rectus muscle insertions. The spiral starts at the medial rectus then moves clockwise ending with the superior rectus which is the farthest insertion from the limbus.
What two muscles sheaths unite to contribute to the suspensory ligament of lockwood?
The Inferior Rectus and Inferior Oblique Muscles.
What coordinates eye movement with eyelid positioning of the lower lid in downward gaze?
The capsulopalpebral fascia which is an extension of the inferior rectus sheath along with the suspensory ligament of lockwood connects inserts into the inferior edge of the tarsal plate.
Where is the origin of the Superior Oblique muscle?
The lesser wing of the sphenoid bone.
Where is the insertion of ther Superior Oblique muscle?
The muscle passes through the trochlea which is a U shaped piece of cartilage attached to the orbital part of the frontal bone and inserts 1 cm posterior to the trochlea.
What is the origin of the Inferior Oblique muscle?
The origin is on the maxillary bone. It is the only EOM to have origin in the anterior orbit.
What ligaments limit the movement of the globe?
The Medial and Lateral Check Ligaments
What are the secondary actions of the superior rectus?
Adduction and Intorsion
What are the secondary actions of the inferior rectus?
Adduction and Extorsion
What are the primary and secondary actions of the Superior Oblique muscle?
The primary action is Intorsion

The secondary actions are depression and abduction
What are the primary and secondary actions of the Inferior Oblique muscle?
The primary action is Extorsion

The secondary action is elevation and abduction
