Sanctification of Human Life
In spite of the many severe persecutions that Christians endured for three centuries, they did not relent in promoting the sanctity of human life. They saw child abandonment as a form of murder, and their tenacious efforts eventually produced results. When Emperor Valentinian outlawed infanticide in 374, he also criminalized child abandonment.

St Augustine of Hippo (354-430)
Known as a doctor of the church...
His Mother was Monica (Who founded the church of St Monica
Resided in Carthage, North Africa; The center of Christian Faith at the time was based in North Africa.
He would resist/rebel against his mother's pleas, and become a Manichean.
In 391, a crowd took him and forced him into priesthood.
By 397 he becomes the Bishop of Hippo.
He wrote the very first auto-biography ever, to God, to address what he was and why he converted.
Wrote a book in 418 called City of God.
He says that according to the bible, every Christian Resides in two cities: City of God AND the Physical Human City (Rome).
What is Monasticism?
The religious practice in which one renounces worldly pursuits in order to fully devote one's life to spiritual work
Monasticism Causes
Begins in the east, and spead to the west where it lead to formed communities.
St Benedict of Nursia (d. 540)
His RuleL How a monk should live and how the community is run.
E.g. Hair is an object of vanity
He also Stated that all things; Eating, drinking, sleeping, reading, working and praying should all be done in moderation.
St Benedict; Opus Dei and Lectio Divinia.
Opus Dei (Work of God) like charity work and Spiritual services

Lectio Divinia- the monks would learn how to read in the monastaries.
Monks and Poverty
Monks would take a vow of Poverty because they believed that material items would take your focus away from God.
Spiritual services of Monks to the community include:
Worship Services
Training in the faith
Example of piety.
Cultural, Social and Educational Services of Monks
They taught many people the skills of agriculture, invented the mole board of the plow

They drained swamps, built roads, cultivated land, brought fruit trees to remote places

Built places of refuge for travelers

Maintained libraries and copied and distributed books.
