DO NOT flex extended arm
Rooting
when infants cheek is stroked, infant will turn head and direct the mouth toward that side.
Functional Significance: feeding
Crossed Extention
one leg is extended, pressure is applied to the sole of the foot, opposite leg will flex, abduct, and hen extend.
Functional significance: retention can interfere with reciprocal kicking & later motor skills.
Positive Supporting in LEs
when supported in a standing position with feet firmly contacting support surface, infant will flex & extend legs one at a time.
Functional significance: mobility
UE Proprioceptive placing
When back of one hand rubs against a surface, UE flexes to bring hand up over the surface.
Functional significance: reaching movement pattern
Traction
when pulling to sitting position from supine, shoulders and arms flex/elevate.
Functional significance: stabilizes head until self head control is possible.
Galant
prone position, when stroked on one side of the back, lateral flexion toward that side.
Functional significance: failure to integrate is often seen with athetoid CP.
Stepping
infant supported with feet on the floor, infant will step with one foot at a time.
Functional significance: walking
Moro
"startle" response to loud noise or sudden position change.
Functional significance: can impede voluntary movement.
Palmar
pressure on palm elicits grasp, gently stroking. medial side of hand opens hand.
Functional significance: integrates at a time that a functional version develops
Plantar
pressure to the ball of foot elicits toe flexion.
Functional significance: integrates at a time that a functional version develops.
Babinski
gently stroke the sole or side of foot, toes fan apart in abduction.
Functional significance: presence or recurrence after age 2 can indicate damage to corticospinal tracts.
Landau
"superman" when suspended in prone, head and legs extend; when head is moved into flexion from this position, legs drop down.
Functional significance: infant is emerging from total flexion pattern.
Tonic Labyrinthine
neck and extremities should extend when back is supported. in prone, flex.
Functional significance: mist be suppressed before child can learn to roll, crawl, or creep effectively.
Asymmetric Tonic Neck
head turned to side, same side arm and leg extention, opposite side arm and leg flexion.
Functional significance: initial total UE movement patterns.
Symmetric Tonic Neck Reflex
neck extension, LE flexion; neck flexion, LE extension
Functional significance: related to development of crawling
Righting: neck on body
in supine turn neck, body should follow
Functional significance: rolling
Righting: body on body
in supine turn shoulder or hip, body should follow
Functional significance: rolling
Labyrinthine/optical head righting
body tilted to one side, head tilts in opposite direction to keep head upright
Functional significance: visual orientation, balance
Supine Tilting
laying on back, if rolled too far, neck will flex, and LE will extend
FS : balance
Prone tilting
on prone, if rolled, bring self back to middle
FS: balance
sitting tilting
sitting, tilted to one side opposite arm extends
FS: balance
Standing Tilting
When tilted forward too far while standing, toes raise to being u back to middle
FS: balance
Protective Extension: downward
Parachute, extremities extend when infant is quickly let down.
FS: protect from falling
Protective Extension: sideways
when pushed to one side, arm of "falling" side extends
FS: protect from falling
Protective Extension: backward
when pushed back, arms extend behind body
FS: protect from falling
Protective Extension: forward
when pushed forward, arms extend in front of body
FS: protect from falling
Protective stepping
while standing, if pushed feet will do steps
FS: protect from falling
