A choice is informed when

you have accurate information on all of the possible things that could happen if you make that choice

What are the 4 PHE Agreements?

- One Mic

- Be respectful and supportive

- Speak your truth

- Be comfortable with being uncomfortable

One Mic

- To show respect, we ask that we have only one spacer at a time

- Please raise your hand to participate or ask a question

Be Respectful and Supportive (I)

- Show respect for each other at all times

- We all have different backgrounds, experiences, and opinions, and we all have the right to be heard.

-Showing respect means listening to one another and not making negative comments

Be Respectful and Supportive (II)

- We will talk about personal topics (ex: sex) so remember that everyone's experience is different

- We refe to both heterosexual and homosexual relationships when we talk about sexual/romantic relationships.

- Be respectful and supportive even if something is different that what you've experienced, that doesn't make it wrong (esp. with personal topics)

Speak your truth

- Say what is true for you, based on your own experiences

- Please do not share other people's personal information

- Say what you believe instead of what you think others (peers, educators, teachers, etc) WANT to hear.

- Be "real"

Be comfortable with being uncomfortable

- Take some healthy risks ( ex: ask a question, answer a question even if you're not sure of the answer, try activities)

- Everyone in this class has something to contribute! However, participation is voluntary.

PHE Overview Do-Now

- Do-Now: What does this song say about health?

- 2-3 R

- Do you think that these messages help you be healthy? Why or why not?

PHE Overview Do-Now: What is healthy?

The word "healthy" is really broad, and each of you might have your own definition

PHE Overview: Think Pair-Share

What health topics do YOU think are most important for us to talk about in PHE?

PHE Overview: Program

- We are going to talk about relationships, sex, alcohol, marijuana, and mental health

- We're also going to practice skills that can help us make healthy choices

- We'll ask you to think about how you might use the skills we're practicing in your own life (ex: topics we don't get to)

PHE Overview: Program (goals)

- We hope that by the end of the 13-workshops you will be able to identify your goals for being Healthy

- Help you develop knowledge and skills so that you will meet YOUR goals for being healthy

- We're going to ask you to apply what you learn to your own life throughout PHE WS.

PHE Overview: Reflection

What does it mean to reflect?

- Reflection means "stopping and thinking"

- could mean 1 minute check in

- 15 minute/day set aside

PHE Overview: Introduction to Reflection

- What do you think reflection has to do with making healthy decisions?

- stopping and thinking allows us to pause and think--> right choices

- We'll use stories to start discussions and practice (some might be relevant/not)

Scenario: Important Points I

- Kayla is passed out, which is the result of her brain starting to shut down

- Passing out from drinking is medical emergency

- The amount of alcohol it takes a person to pass out is close to the amount it takes to kill

- Passing out can look very similar to sleeping (except they will not wake up if you shake or hit them)

Scenario: Important Points II

- What should you do when someone is passed out

- If from alcohol, call 911

- Longer person remain passed out, the more danger they are in. Stomach is still absorbing alcohol, so they are becoming more drunk

Group Reflection

- What decision did Kayla make about drinking before the party? Why didn't she stick to her decision?

- Did Kayla do a good job of communicating her decision not to get drunk? Why or why not? What could she have done differently?

- Why do you think Kayla took a shot with Devon after she'd already had a couple of beers? What do you think influenced that decision?

- Sofia was struggling with what to do at then end of the scenario. Why?

Group Reflection: Skill lists

- How young people MAKE DECISIONS about their health

- What INFLUENCES our decisions

- How we COMMUNICATE about our decisions

- How we can SPEAK UP for our health and the health of other people around us

- How we can GET INFORMATION about our health

Conclusion: Reflection

- Turn to page 21 in your workbook. You will have 4 minutes to answer the questions on your own

Conclusion: Closing Discussions

How do you think that kind of personal reflection can help you?

- The scenarios we discuss in PHE may feel relevant to your life right now, or they may not.

- No matter what, we invite you to "stop and think"

- Reflection gives you the chance to consider YOUR life, YOUR choice, and what YOU care about so that you'll be more prepared if you ever face situations like these in the future.

- The topics we discuss are one that many young people face; if they are not relevant right now they may be in future, or you may be able to help friends/family
