[1 Kings 11–14] The first king of Israel after the division of the kingdom. Leads revolt against Rehoboham (1 Kings 12). Sets up idols and judgement comes on house. He reigned for 22 years.

(3, 1, 3, 1) The last of the OT prophets. Baptized Jesus.

Pharisees

Throughout the gospels - esp. Matt 23. Non-professional, small (6,000 adherents), influential. Held in high esteem by populace and they considered themselves the true Israel. Insisted they preserved and interpreted the oral Law of Moses (see Mt. 5:20). For them the life of faith was obedience to the Law and they held de facto that tradition and interpretation supersede law.

Saducees

Throughout the Gospels, esp. Mk. 12
Strong adherence to biblical authority, as opposed to oral traditions of Pharisees. Human agency stressed over fate and God’s activity. Anti-supernaturalists: denied resurrection and angels. Were priestly, aristocratic, wealthy and largely unpopular with the people. Cooperated with the Romans.

The Apostles (name them)

Matt 10; Mark 3 - Simon (Peter), Andrew (brother of Simon), James (Son of Zebedee), John (brother of James), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the tax collector), James (Son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon (the Zealot), and Judas Iscariot (who betrayed Jesus), later replaced by Matthias (Ac. 1).

Nicodemus

John 3 - The Pharisee and teacher of Israel who visited Jesus at night and conversed with Jesus about his miracles, teaching, and the new birth.

Martha & Mary

Luke 10; John 11 - Martha is the sister of Mary and Lazarus of Bethany. When Jesus came to visit Mary and Martha, Mary neglected her household tasks to listen to Jesus, and was chided by Martha (Lk. 10). Mary also anointed Jesus with costly perfume (26, 14, 0, 12)

Lazarus

John 11-12 - The brother of Mary and Martha whom Jesus rose from the dead. In Jn. 12, the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus on account of his witness to Christ.

The Syrophoenician Woman

Matt. 15; Mark 7 - The woman who implored Jesus to heal her sick daughter. Jesus marveled at her faith.

The woman at the well

John 4 - The Samaritan woman to whom Jesus explicitly revealed his Messianic identity.

Zacchaeus

Luke 19 - A chief tax-collector who repented and became a follower of Christ after dining with Jesus.

Mary Magdalene

Luke 8; John 20 - A woman out of whom Jesus cast out seven demons. She helped provide for Jesus & his disciples, and was the first to see the risen Christ.

Caiaphas

The high priest at the time of Jesus' trial and death (26, 14, 22, 18). Advised the religious leaders to kill Jesus and presided over one of the pre-crucifixion trials of Christ.

Simon of Cyrene

A man who was compelled by the Romans to carry the cross of Christ (27, 15, 23, 0).

Ananias and Sapphira

Acts 5 - A husband and wife in the early church who lied to God and others about their generosity and were subsequently struck dead by God.

Stephen

Acts 6-7 - The first recorded martyr of the church who bore witness to Christ before the Sanhedrin.

Philip

John 1 & various passages in the gospels - Called (Jn.1) to be an Apostle and disciple of Christ.

Paul

Ac. 7, 9, 13-28; Pauline epistles. Born in Tarsus, a Roman citizen. Educated in Jerusalem as a Pharisee under Gamaliel. Initially persecuted the church as a member of the Sanhedrin, but was confronted by Christ on the Damascus road and converted. Author of Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, 1-2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon

Dorcas

Acts 9 - Also named Tabitha. Raised from the dead by Peter in Acts 9.

Barnabas

Acts 4, 11-12 - Sold his land and brought the proceeds to the Apostles in Acts 4. Also brought assistance to Judea in Acts 11-12.

Silas

Acts 15-18 - A travelling companion of Paul who was instrumental in the conversion of the Philippian jailor.

Timothy

Acts 16; 1-2 Timothy - A travelling companion of Paul and a pastor at the church in Ephesus. Timothy was the recipient of 1-2 Timothy.

Lydia

Acts 16 - A seller of purple who was converted by the preaching of Paul in Philippi.

Priscilla and Aquila

Acts 18 - Tentmakers who were friends of Paul and missionary / gospel workers in the early church.

Agrippa II

Acts 25-26 - The governor of Judea when Paul defended himself against Jewish charges that he had committed crimes deserving of death.

Epaphroditus

Phil. 4 - A leader in the Philippian church who delivered gifts to Paul in his imprisonment and assist him in his work.

Phil. 4 - Euodia and Syntyche were women in the early church who were experiencing conflict in their relationship with one another. In Phil. 4, Paul instructs them to agree in the Lord.

James
