Germany was part of the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy. The Triple Entente included Britain, France and Russia. Germany was bordered by two Entente members: Russia in the East and France in the West. |

What was the Schlieffen Plan? |
The aim was to defeat France within six weeks, before dealing with Russia. Germany believed that while Russia had a large army, it would be slow to mobilise its troops. |
