Why did Germany have to worry about a 'war on two fronts'?

Germany was part of the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy. The Triple Entente included Britain, France and Russia. Germany was bordered by two Entente members: Russia in the East and France in the West.

What was the Schlieffen Plan?

The aim was to defeat France within six weeks, before dealing with Russia. Germany believed that while Russia had a large army, it would be slow to mobilise its troops.
