Lit Reviews are designed
to provide their readers with a sense of the key ideas or conceptual models used to structure research as well as the key findings of various research projects
Lit reviews examine
in a thoughtful manner, the work of key authors, the classics that people always refer to, the types of studies conducted, the demographic sampled, the statistical methods used, and other aspects of studies that have been done
Good lit review
Well written as coherent essays that provide structure & logic to the often inchoate and unplanned ways in which a topic or area has been investigated. They make sens of what has not always been a coherently researched field. They include information about key studies & lines of research that the author of hte lit review explains and highlights, sometimes there is no coherent stucture to the research & up to author of lit review to point out the highlights that pattern
The reasons to undertake the breadth & depth of reading involved include:
Assisting you in clarifying your purpose statement
Providing background information for your research proposal Preventing you from doing work that has already been done Benefiting from the work of others Assisting in the analysis of your findings |
Purpose of a literature review
Build credibitlity for the research
Clarify the research goal or purpose statemetn Give background information Identify key issues which provide a context for your work Save you from making errors by repeating others work or not benefiting from their experiences Help you analyze what you find |
Providing backgroun info for your proposal need to know:
What others have done
What key researchers in this field have done What major theories or conceptual models have been identified What designs have been used to conduct research What suggestions have been made for future research What topics are timely and new as opposed to topics that have already been fully investigated |
When reading scholarly articles or these for a lit review you should look for the following
Insights or findings
Type of research -quan,qual,mixed Structure of the research design Use of pilot study Research tactics-survey,?ionare,experiement, focus group Type of sample-convenience, purposive, ranom, non random, cluster, etc Demographics of the sample(if appropriate) Statistical methods of anlysis Limitations of study Suggestions for future research Dates of works cited in the bib |
When reading ind. reports or conceptual pieces look for
Insights or findings
Support - financial or otherwise-for the research Goal of the publication Type of research - quan, qual, mixed Structure of the research design Type of sample - convenience, purposive, random, non random, cluster, etc. Dates of sources used to prepare the report Sources consulted |
Columbus or Sherlock Holmes method of reading
where you serach for info in each article rather than reading it from the beg. to end will provide you with more useful data to use in comping you lit. review & will help you focus on the key elements you need to consider in preparing the analysis tha is key aspect of a lit review
In broad reading
look for common researchers, common issues, common methods & patterns & gaps in what you read
The more simliarities & patterns & gaps that you find, the better the quality of your research will be & the stronger your case for the validity & improtance of your research design or project |
Order of reading
Intro
Conclusion or Bibliography Research results & key findings Research design & methodology Literature review Full reading of entire article |
Reading tips
Record full bibliographical info as soon as you start to read an article
Read discussion and findings carefully and write about them as you go Build notes around the topics of your literature review and not around the articles themselves |
1st thing to do when start article/book/publication
1st thing to do is record the full bibiliographical information of the document..meaning the full name of the author, the full title of the article, the name of the publication and the volume & number, the date of publication & the pages of the article..as you start reading a section start to write a paragraph about that insight or finding or demographic
