- Resulted in nearly total control of the industries


- ended in 1948

Independents!


- By 1960, studio system was in dramatic decline


- Independent ex = Miramax (founded by Bob and Harvey Weinstein (1979) as distributors)

What is a Race film?

Created race films


- Began by writing novels and selling them door-to-door


- Created the Micheaux Book & Film Company (1918)


- Created 30 films over 10 years dealing with lynching, interracial marriage, etc; most were lost


- Movies usually had an all-Black cast and allowed people of colour to be seated wherever they pleased
