Amoxicillin


Give for strep, can cause anaphylaxis, watch kidneys,


N/V and thrush may occur, if you have a "Cillin" allergy, you may have a cephalosporin allergy as well.

Antibiotic

Cephlexin (keflex)

Treats staph, watch rash, n/v, bronchospasm, allergies. WATCH BLEEDING, cross-sensitivity

Vancomycin (vancocin)

Give for c-diff, mrsa and other serious infections. WATCH renal failure, no nephrotoxic drugs (NSAIDS), serum peak and trough, thrombophlebitis IV, thrombocytopenia is rare.

Antibacterial

Tetracycline

For acne and peridontal disease, no pregnancy or children under 8, watch renal issues, can stain teeth permanently limit sunlight (photosynthesis), take 2 hours after milk, Ca, Mg and antacids

Erythromycin

Treats pertussis,diphtheria and legionares. Can cause prolonged QT Intervals (cardiac death) and bone marrow suppression. Monitor CBC

Macrolide

Clindamycin (cleocin)

Give for gangrene, pelvic/abdominal infection and gum/ anaerobic infection. WATCH FOR C- DIFF and take with water

Gentamicin

Treatment of infections, systemic infections of the CNS, UTIs , acute pelvic inflammatory disease. Watch nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. Check hearing and renal function (BUN and creatinine). Increase fluids, smaller meals. Most importantly teach report signs of tinnitus or hearing trouble.

Aminoglycoside

Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim)

Used for UTIs caused by E-Coli, watch CNS (hallucinations, HA), hypersensitivity reactions, caution with renal impairment ( drink with lots of water), take on empty stomach with a full glass of water. Do not use if pregnant or infant under 2 months

Sulfonamides and trimethoprim

Ciprofloxacin

Treatment of anthrax, UTIs grams positive and negative infections and bacteria that causes enteritis. CNS effects (HA, dizziness, restlessness and confusion.) Causes candidal infections. Tendon rupture (no exersize until ruled out, report tendon/joint pain) increased risk of c-DIFF, seizures, phototoxicity. Increased risk of confusion, psychosis, visual disturbances in elderly. Abdominal pain and N/V/D

Fluoroquinolones

Isoniazide (nydrazid)

Primary treatment of TB, hepatotoxicity, peripheral neuropathy, can cause optic neuritis, seizures, psych disturbances, anemia, urine retention and ataxia

Tb drug

Rifampin (rifadin)

Treatment for TB, watch hepatotoxicity, harmless red-Orange color to secretions ( may stain contacts), helps isoniazide work better

Pyrazinamide

Treats TB, watch liver, joint pain, hyperuricemia/gouty arthritis

TB med

Ethambutol

WATCH optic neuritis, used when other tb meds don't work, part of a multi drug regimen, treatment for TB

Broad-spectrum antibiotic


Need to be in hospital under


suppression –highly toxic


WATCH RBC and Hct (suppression)


Can cause hypokalemia, bone marrow suppression, nephrotoxicity


Anaphylaxis can occur


Don’t take with aminoglycosides, cyclosporine,or NSAIDS
