The first step in the Quick Stop Method is to prevent it from happening in the first place. What things can we do to avoid having our crew fall overboard?

Wear shoes with non-skid soles

One hand for you and one for the boat

Keep low, with knees bent to maintain balance

Brief inexperienced crew on safe & danger zones

Watch the boom

Stay on the high side

Avoid being outside sheets on a tack

Use a safety harness

Wear a lifevest

Quick Stop is a Method for recovering a PIW

The hallmark of this method is it quickly stops the boat so you stay closer to the PIW.

Benefits of staying close?

A. You are less likely to lose sight

B. You are more likely to get there quicker thus raising the chances the person will be alive

All overboard rescues have seven steps:

1. Get BUOYANCY out

2. Keep the PIW in sight

3. STEER BACK tto the PIW

4. STOP the boat alongside PIW

5. Make CONTACT with the PIW

6. ATTACH the PIW to the boat

7. Get the PIW back INTO BOAT

Let’s play those out for the Quick Stop Method

1. Get buoyance to the person in the water

2. Keep the PIW in sight

A. ASSIGN A SPOTTER.

B. Bring the boat into the wind, trimming the mainsail and jib to close hauled. If you have a spinnaker, this will help you douse it by allowing it to blow onto deck

3.

A. Tack and fall off. Don't ease the sails

B. Drop or furl headsail once PIW is aft of your stern.

C. Keep sheets tight if you drop the headsail.

D. Jibe (notify crew first)

E. Steer towards victim by going abeam and approaching on close reacch

4. Stop the boat alongside PIW

a. Ease or back main to stop. Make sure engine is off or at least in neutral.

5. Make contact with the PIW

a. Ideally through a throwing sock

6. Attach the PIW to the boat

7. Get the PIW back into the boat

What can you use to do that?

Works the same if you are going downwind when the person falls off.

Final tips.

Practice makes perfect. Try these in many different seastates.Do it regularly. I like to make a game out of it with my daughter.
