How does planning apply to the supervisor?
The overall purpose of planning is to make it easier to get the job done.
What is ORGANIZING?
Organizing makes it possible for personnel to work effectively towards accomplishing a common goal.
What is the difference between organizing and staffing?
Remember that organizing normally applies to groups while staffing applies to individuals.
What is the purpose of directing?
Directing enables subordinates to understand and effectively contribute to the accomplishment of the mission.
What is key for supervisor efectiveness?
To be effective, supervisors must have clearly stated goals and standards, which subordinates know and understand. Communication is the key!
The fifth basic function of management is?
Controlling.
The control process involves what three steps?
(1) establishing standards, (2) measuring performance against these standards, and (3) identifying problems to be corrected.
To determine how effective the controlling phase is what question is asked?
Are the objectives being met?
What characterizes a good training philosophy?
• Decide what must be done.
• Decide how it is to be done.
• Decide who is going to do it.
• Decide when it is to be done.
• Do it.
• Make sure it was done right.
What are four methods of teaching new knowledge or manual skills?
• Lecture. The lecture is useful for giving information; however, its effectiveness is increased when it is combined with the other instructional methods.
• Discussion. Discussion is a valuable training method because it promotes a two-way exchange of ideas during group instruction. Ask questions to provoke thought and check trainee understanding. To help the trainee think through the logical task steps, phrase questions so they cannot be answered with a straight “yes” or “no.” Use questions that begin with such words as what, who, where, when, why, and how.
• Demonstration. Demonstration is most effective when the training objective is the development of new manual skills.
• Performance. The performance by the trainee is the end result of the training process. If performance is satisfactory in accordance with (IAW) the standard, the trainee can be certified. If performance is unsatisfactory, then training was flawed, technical or training references (TR) were inaccurate, or the trainee is deficient. Evaluate the cause of unsatisfactory training and conduct remedial training.
What are five steps to effectively conduct OJT?
STEP 1 - PREPARE THE TRAINING ENVIRONMENT
• Make sure the tools and equipment are on hand and in working order.
• Ensure a shop or room is available and properly heated, lighted, and ventilated.
• Ensure training aids planned for use are available and work correctly.
STEP 2 - PREPARE TRAINEES TO RECEIVE JOB INSTRUCTION
• Put trainees at ease. This helps build confidence. The supervisor's training efforts are likely to be in vain if trainees are nervous or ill at ease.
• Find out what they already know about the job. Do not teach things they already know. Start where their knowledge ends.
• Gain their interest, explain the job or operation at hand, and relate the job to the work of the whole unit. This helps them realize the importance of the job.
• When demonstrating a job, make sure the trainees have a clear view.
STEP 3 - INSTRUCTION
• Tell, show, illustrate, and then question to ensure understanding.
• Give only a few instructions at one time. There is faster and more thorough understanding of subject matter when ideas are presented gradually.

• Make the key points clear. To a large extent, this determines the success of the training.
• Use available training aids if they get the point across. Do not use them just to fill in time. Before using any training aid, be sure it applies directly to the subject.
• Be patient--work for accuracy first and speed later.
• Repeat the job and explanation, if necessary.
STEP 4 - PERFORMANCE
• Have the trainees do the job. Ask them to repeat the job and have them explain what they are doing. Understand that some people do not realize the importance of the motions they are observing and repeating.
• Have the trainees explain key points. Correct any errors, but do not correct mistakes in a way that makes them feel inadequate or that they are not progressing satisfactorily.
• Have trainees continue practice until they have a thorough understanding of the process.
STEP 5 - FOLLOW-UP
• Let the trainees work on their own to get the feel of the job by doing it. Tell them where they should go for help and make sure the designated individuals understand their responsibilities.
• Check trainees' work frequently--perhaps every few minutes at the start and then every few hours. Ensure bad habits do not develop. Look for incorrect or unnecessary moves. Expect a few mistakes. If there are none, congratulate the trainees for a job well done.
• Taper off the coaching until the trainees are able to work under normal supervision. Be sure the trainees are adhering to approved safety practices.
What are five basic steps in the work center training program development process?
• Develop an MTL or WTA.
• Identify training sources.
• Develop work center duty positions.
• Implement the training program.
• Evaluate the training program.

The number of demands for a particular item gives Base Supply an indication of how many of these items to purchase and keep in stock to meet future demands. When submitting an issue request to Base Supply, the work center supervisor normally uses either “R” for recurring, “N” for nonrecurring, and “DC R” when anticipating additional like items may be needed in the future. Use “DC N” when the item is not to be reordered.
