Define the job of sonographer.
A sonographer performs ultrasound studies and gathers diagnostic data under the direct supervision of a physician
What is the role of the sonographer?
* provide patient care
* ensure equipmt. is up-to-date 4 exam
* ensure dx info by providing appropriate images for dr. interpretation
* differentiate normal from abnormal sonographic anatomy
What are the sonographer's responsibilities to the patient?
* responsible for the type of care they give their patients
* all patients deserve to be treated w/ respect, dignity and kindness
What are the patient's rights?
* right to info re: their health care and to decision-making re: dx and trtmt
* right to refuse trtmt or tests
* right to privacy and to decline students
* may have their friends in rm - follow hospital policies
* expect pleasant physical and emotional surroundings
* feel comfortable, safe and respected as an individual
What is the proper physical environment?
* proper ventilation & temp.
* adequate lighting
* comfortable and safe furnishings
* equipmt in good wkg. order
* access to bathrm facilities
* safe and private area for disrobing & storing personal articles
What are appropriate emotional surroundings?
* patient should be treated as an individual
* staff should introduce themselves and explain procedure
* privacy should be respected at all times
* sonographer should not impose beliefs on their patient
What are the safety considerations?
* know location of emergency equipmt.
* recognize that unconscious/sedated patients aren't responsible for their own safety
* consider natural curiosity of children
* elderly patients may have poor vision or hearing
What are some safety measures to take?
* lock the wheels and lift footrests
* restraints must be ordered by a dr. or charge nurse
* use only safety inspected and approved devices for warming gel
* look for items likely to cause accidents
What are sonographer safety guidelines?
* use proper body mechanics
* obtain adequate help for lifting/moving heavy objects/patients
* ensure electrical equipmt is properly grounded
* be aware of isolation policies
What should the student sonographer know?
* clinical training experience are the most valuable aspect of program
* patients have right to refuse participation in training
* scanning test objects/"volunteers" is useful for hands-on experience
