Phase 1 of Crisis
Person confronted by crisis that threatens the self-concept responds with anxiety.
Stimulates use of problem solving mechanisms and defense mechanisms to solve the problem andreduce anxiety
Phase 2 of Crisis
Usual defense mechanism fails, continued threat causes increased anxiety and extreme discomfort.
Functioning becomes disorganized, trial and error kicks in to attempt to solve
Phase 3 of Crisis
Trial and error fails, severe anxiety or panic, person employs automatic relief behaviors (flight or withdrawal)
Phase 4 of Crisis
Problem not solved and new coping skills are ineffective, anxiety can overwhelm leading to serious disorganization, depression, confusion, violence, or suicidal behavior
Crisis timeframe
Crisis is self-limiting and usually resolved within 4-6 weeks.

Return person to pre-crisis functioning status.
