anti-inflammatory agents
purpose: to decrease inflammation. treats bronchospasm, asthma

bronchodilator agents
purpose: treats bronchospasm, wheeing, and SOB in asthma and COPD
mechanism: relieve bronchospasm by stimulating receptors that cause bronchial smooth muscle relaxation or by blocking receptors that trigger bronchoconstriction

expectorant agents
purpose: to treat cough, sinusitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, asthma with mucus
mechanism: increase respiratory secretions to help loosen mucus. reduce mucus viscosity
side effects: gastrointestinal distress, drowsiness |
mucolytic agents
purpose: treat viscous mucus secretions from pneumonia, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis
mechanism: decrease viscosity of mucus by altering heir composition through a nebulizer
side effects: pharyngitis, oral mucosa inflammation, rhinitis, chest pain |
