Why is a grid important?

it is a means of alignment that determines where to place graphic elements, imagery and text. Maintain clarity, legibility and balance.

What are margins, columns and gutters?
|
Margins form a frame of negative space around the live area. Columns contain the body text as well as imagery. Gutters is the space between the columns and the pages.

How does column width affect size of typeface?
|
Poor choice of text typeface and size can create awkward rags, rivers of white space, or a column that appears out of proportion to the column's width.

What is body text and how does it differ from other typographic elements on a page?
|
Body text refers to the body of written content on a page. It is sized and placed in the layout in ways that support a predetermined hierarchy.

What is an initial cap and what does it do?
|
The first word at he beginning of a paragraph is made larger than the surrounding text. Used to add interest and break up long passages of text.

|
pieces of hyphenated words or whole lines that appear by themselves at the top of a column or before a paragraph break.

What is the difference between pie charts, bar charts, and graphs and how are they used?
|
Pie divide a shape into portions, bar charts work well for comparison. Graphs plot trends. Used to make statistics more visually engaging and meaningful.
