define parental investment.

any investment by a parent in an offspring that increases the chance that the offspring will survive at the expense of that parents ability invest in any other offspring (Trivers 1972)

what is at the heart of Trivers theory?

that males and females do not invest equally.

why is this?

females: eggs are numerous so more costly --> select males based on quality.




males: potential unlimited offspring number --> compete for quantity of females.

males can opt out female cannot so males can devote little to parenting.

what does the parental investment theory state?

that the sex making larger investment will be more sexually discriminating. Sex that invests less will compete for access to higher investing-sex.
