persistent, recurring irrational, intrusive, exaggerated thoughts or images, that a person is unable to control and that interfere with normal functioning.

compulsions

irresistible impulses and urges to perform some senseless repetitive behavior or ritual. completing the compulsions reduces anxiety caused by the obsession.
