What is Psychology?
The scientific study of behavior and mental processes.
Goals of Psychology
Describe, predict, explain cause and effect, an modify behavior and mental processes.
Theory
An organized system of assumptions and principles that purports to explain a specified set of phenomena and their interrelationships.
Hypothesis
Testable prediction. A statement that attempts to predict or to account for a set of phenomena; scientific hypotheses specify relationships among events or variables and are empirically tested.
Case Study
In-depth analysis of one individual, group or event. A detailed description of a particular individual being studied or treated.
Survey
Questionnaires and interviews that ask people directly about their experiences, attitudes or opinions.
Naturalistic Observation
Participants who are observed. Occurs in natural situation. Researcher doesn't manipulate situation.
Correlation
Measure relationships between two or more variables.
Cause and Effect Relationships
How one variable affects another variable. If something happens to one, how does this affect the other?
Random Assignment
A procedure for assigning people to experimental and control groups in which each individual has the same probability as any other of being assigned to a given group.
Experimental Control
This is the part of the experiment that is the control. The people in this group are treated exactly the same as the people in the experimental condition but aren't exposed to the same treatment. It helps to reduce confounding varibales (non-controlled variables that might explain the differences between conditions of the independent variable)
Independent Variable
A variable that an experimenter manipulates. (Cause)
Dependent Variable
A variable that an experimenter predicts will be affected by manipulations of the independent variable. (Effect)
Operational Definition
A precise definition of a term in a hypothesis, which specifies the operations for observing and measuring the process of phenomenon being defined.
