Consciousness
a state of awareness, including a person's feelings, sensationgs, ideas, and perceptions
List the 6 proposed reasons as to why we sleep
1.) sleep is restorative; it allows people to "recharge their batteries"

Describe Stage I of sleep
-pulse slows, muscles relax
-breathing becomes uneven and brain waves become irregular

- marked by theta waves (lower amp. than alpha waves)

This stage is part of the 90 minute cycle and occupies approximately 45-60% of sleep
Circadian Rhythm
a biological clock that is genetically programmed to regulate physiological responses within a time period of 24 to 25 hours
REM Sleep
a stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, a high level of brain activity, a deep relaxation in muscles, and dreaming.
Isomnia
the failure to get enough sleep at night in order to feel rested the next day.
Sleep Apnea
a sleep disorder in which a person has trouble breathing while asleep
