-peripheral nervous system, which connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body
what are spinal reflexes?
-automatic, unlearned responses that are controlled @ the level of the spinal cord.(may involve as few as 2 neurons)
how is the peripheral nervous system organized?
-divided into the somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system. the autonomic nervous system is further divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches
what is the autonomic nervous system?
the part of the peripheral nervous system that automatically regulates such internal bodily processes as heartbeat, respiration, digestion, and pupil dilation
what is the relationship between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of autonomic nervous system?
-largely opp. effects. the sympathetic nervous system speeds up bodily processes that expand energy, while tha parasympathetic system slows down some bodily processes and fosters others, such as digestion, that replenish stores of energy
the 2 major divisions in the human nervous system are the _____nervous system and the _____nervous system.
spinal ____ are automatic, unlearned responses that are controlled @ the level of the spinal cord
the peripheral nervous system is divided into the ____nervous system, which conveys info between the central nervous system and sensory organs and muscles, and the ____ nervous system, which automatically controls internal bodily processes
the parasympathetic nervous system...
slows down some bodily processes, which helps conserve stores of energy
