Psychoanalytic Theory
According to Freud, irrational and unconscious psychological forces govern behavior. Behavior stems from interaction with instinctual drives and past experiences. Erotic and sexual impulses may lead to unacceptable thoughts and fantasies which are then repressed in the unconscious because they provide guilt and high anxiety in the conscious awareness. This approach interprets humans as passive recipients of inner biological turmoil

Why do defense mechanisms occur? and why are they self defeating?
Defense mechanisms occur because the super ego and ID threatened experiences for the ego which creates anxiety. In turn, the ego utilizes defense mechanisms to cope. They become self defeating when the mechanisms distort or deny reality.

What are the Oral Receptive characteristics?
Becomes fixated because of overindulgence during feeding......later as an adult gullible, admiration for others, and excess dependence

fixation on deriving pleasure from control over retention of feces...later on in life becomes stingy, orderliness, stubborn, and hoarding of possessions
What are phallic characteristics?
fixation from gratification of manipulating the genitals, constantly have to prove sexual adequacy
Male: proves through sexual conquests
female: ridiculing and humiliating men. Dominating personality
Why was pyschosexual development created?
So people can come to grips with key biological impulses
Is fixation positive or negative? Why?
Negative, prevents learning of new behaviors, acquisition of new interpersonal relationships or even progress in development. Uses large amounts of libido which decreases amount left for the ego for normal adult functioning
