Dispositional domain
Deals with the ways in which individuals differ from one another.
Biological domain
Includes the three areas of study of:
genetics, psychophysiology (nervous system functioning), and evolution (psychological mechanisms of human personality have evolved over the years).
Intrapsychic domain
Deals with mental mechanisms of personality, many of which operate outside of conscious awareness. The predominant theory in this domain is that of Freud's. Includes defense mechanisms.
Cognitive-Experiential domain
Focuses on cognition and subjective experience, as well as goals we strive for and emotions we experience.
Social and Cultural domain
Personality affects and is affected by social and cultural context. Different cultures may bring out different facets of our personalities in manifest behavior. What is acceptable is deemed by one's culture.
Adjustment domain
Refers to the fact that personality plays a key role in how we cope, adapt, and adjust to life's changes.
