Nervous System
refers to the entire network of neurons in the body.
Glial Cells
Glial cells bind the neurons together and will also provide an insulating cover to the myelin sheath
Central Nervous System
Central – Brain and spinal cord – body’s “command central” – the nerve pathways connecting with the sense organs DO NOT pass the spinal cord. The spinal cord takes charge of simple, swift reflexes. The brain coordinates our body functions, and initiates our behaviors.
Peripheral Nervous System
All parts of the nervous system lying outside the central nervous system.
Autonomic Nervous System
sends messages back and forth between the CNS and the internal organs and glands.
Sympathetic Nervous System
sends messages to internal organs and glands that help us respond to stressful and emergency situations
Parasympathetic Nervous System
monitors the routine operations of the internal organs and returns the body to calmer functioning after arousal by the sympathetic division.
Somatic Nerous System
Brain’s communications link with the outside world. Carries sensory information to the CNS and also sends voluntary messages to body’s skeletal muscles
Sensory Nerous System
Connects the sense organs to brain (CNS)
Motor Nervous System
Connects the body’s skeletal muscles (muscles that control voluntary movement) to the brain (CNS)
This part of the nervous system would transfer pain information to the spinal cord when a person hits his/her thumb with a hammer
Peripheral Nervous System
What are the divisions of the peripheral nervous system
autonomic and somatic nervou systems
Interneurons
connect information between sensory and motor neurons
These things occur when the sympathetic nervous system is activated.
pupil dilation, respiration/heart rate increasing, slowed digestion, release of adrenaline
