What is operant conditioning? |
Learning through consequences, reinforcement and punishment. |
What is positive reinforcement? |
Giving something pleasant. A way of shaping behaviour and maintaining its consequences. |
What is negative reinforcement? |
Removing something unpleasant. |
What is positive punishment? |
Adding a mean stimulus that reduces a behaviour. For example shouting at a misbehaving child. |
What is negative punishment? |
The removal of a liked stimulus to reduce the showing of a behaviour. For example, a dog jumps on someone to greet them, if the person shows no attention, it will reduce the dog's jumping in the future. |
What is primary reinforcement? |
Natural reinforcers such as food, water and sex |
What is secondary reinforcement? |
The reinforcers that are closely associated with primary reinforcers such as money. |
What is continuous reinforcement? |
The desired behaviour is reinforced everytime it occurs. For example, a rat presses a lever and food pellets are given every time. |
What is partial reinforcement? |
The desired response is only reinforced some of the time. |
What is behaviour modification? |
A therapy that has its theoretical basis in operant conditioning and the experiments of Skinner |
What is the aim of behaviour modification? |
Extinguish undesirable behaviour and replace original behaviour with a desirable behaviour. |
What is the process of behaviour modification? |
The desired behaviour is broken down into steps and every time a right step is taken, a reward is given. |
