sensation
the stimulation of sensory receptors and transmission of sebsory informarion to the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain)
where are sensory receptors located?
in sensory organs such as eyes and ears.
the stimulation for sensory receptors are what?
autonomic
perception
a psychological process through which we interpret sensory stimulation.
absolute threshold
the weakest amount of stimulus that can be sensed.
absolute thresholds have been determined for which senses?
vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch
difference threshold
the minimum amount of difference that can be detected between two stimuli.
signal detection theory
method of distinguishing sensory stimuli that takes into account not only their strengths but akso such elements aa the setting, your physical state, your mood, and your attitudes.
sensory adaptation
the process by which we become more sensitive to weak stimuli and less sensitive to unchanging stimuli.
visual acuity
sharpness of vision.
how is visual actuity determined?
by the ability to see visual details (in normal light)
what is the color circle?
the colors of the spectrum bent into a circle.
what are complementary colors? what happens when they mix?
they are colors that are across from each other. when they mix they make gray.
why do complementary colors such as blue and yellow not make green?
bc that is only true in pigments, such as crayons and paint. this is refering to light.
afterimage
when u have stared at a color for a while and then the color is removed and u look to a blank area and u see its complentary colored afterimage. same goes for black and white.
color blind
people who do not havw normal color vision
what is partial color blindness? What kind is the most common?
when you can only see certain colors but not all. It is fairly common and the most common kind is the red-green color blindness
what does the pitch of the sound depend on? high or low?
the frequency or the number of cycles per second.
what determines the loudness of a sound wave?
the height or amptitude.
what is the loudness of sound measured by?
decibels
conductive deafness
occurs when there is damage to the middle ear
what are hearing aids?
they help people with conductive deafness hear the amplification that the middle ear doesnt provide.
what is the loudness of a sound determined by? what is the loudness measured in?
by the height, or amplitude, of sound waves. measured in decibels.
conductive deafness
occurs when there is damage to the middle ear and since thats the part that amplifies sound, usually people are required to use a hearing aid.
sensorineural deafness
occurs when there is damage to the inner ear and is usually due to damage to the auditory nerve, through either disease or through prolonged exposure to extremely loud sounds.
smell
odors of substances are detected by receptors neurons high in each nostril.
olfactory nerve
when the receptors send information about the odors to the brain.
sweet, sour, salty, and bitter
are the basic taste qualities
umami
believed to be the fifth basic taste bud which verifies a "meaty" or "savory" taste like when you eat steak with no steak sauce just plain.
gate theory
says that only a certain amount of information can be processed by the nervous system at a time.
phantom pain
when someone experiences pain in a amputated limb that is no longer there such as veterans, who believe the limb is still there but not actually there. Says that the pain is real but no tissue damage.
