Psychoanalysis

Aim = Release repressed emotions and experiences making the unconscious conscious.


It is a lengthy process due to defence mechanisms and trying to resolve the underlying conflict.


The analyst is a blank screen very little about themselves.


Different techniques used such as ink blots, freudian slip and free association. This is where the client says the word that comes to mind associated with the word said by the analyst. If pause then it shows there is some conflict there.

Evaluation of Psychoanalysis

+ Many personality theories are still influential and used today.


+ Psychoanalysis opened a new view on mental illnesses as first talking cure with professional help to relieve symptoms.


- Case studies so small sample therefore difficult to generalise.


- Many concepts are impossible to test therefore it is unscientific.


Play therapy

Aim = helps the child understand muddled feelings and upsetting events by using objects to symbolise the real world. There is large selection of materials to choose from where the child can play through painful events such as divorce and place negative thoughts onto toys.
