- Can follow instructions
• Can report subjective experiences • Can be less expensive • Findings can sometimes be more directly applied to human diseases/conditions |
What are the disadvantages of human research?
• Overall, just harder
– Administratively (Institutional review boards etc.) – Limited in what biological pathways can be measured – Reduced capacity for determining cause and effect – Can sometimes be very expensive (MRI) |
What are the advantages of animal research?
1) Certain behaviors are expressed in a wide variety of species
2) Simplest system with qualities of interest 3) More economical to develop methods on animals that may be useful for humans 4) Ethical considerations; some manipulations are not permissible in humans |
What are the disadvantages of animal research
1) Enormous species differences
(behaviors may represent adaptations to very specific environments) 2) Harder to train (animals usually won’t follow directions) 3) Ethical considerations |
What are the levels of analysis?
When performing studies, need to decide what will be measured.
-No one analysis is best -The levels are -Social Level -Organ Level -Neural systems Level -Brain region level -Circuit region level -Cellular level -Synaptic level -Molecular level |
