probability
probability is used to predict what kind of samples are likely to be obtained from a population.

the probability of any particular outcome, when different outcomes are possible, is defined as a fraction or a proportion of all the possible outcomes.
random sample
random sampling requires that each individual in a population has an equal chance of being selected, and that the probabilities must stay constant from one selection to the next if more than one individual is selected
binomial distribution
shows the probability associated with each value of X from X=0 to X=n
under what circumstances is the normal distribution an accurate approximation to the binomial distribution?
when the pn and qn are both greater than 10
random sample
sample obtained using a process that gives every individual an equal chance of being selected and keeps the probability of being selected constant over a series of selections
sampling with replacement
sampling technique that returns the current selection to the population before the next selection is made. this is a required part of random sampling
normal distribution
a symmetrical, bell-shaped distribution with proportions corresponding to those listed in the unit normal table
unit normal table
a table listing proportions corresponding to each z-score location in a normal distribution
percentile
a score that is identified by the percentage of the distribution that falls below its value
percentile rank
the percentage of a distribution that falls below a certain score
binomial distribution
the distribution of probabilities, for each possible outcome for a series of observations of a dichotomous variable
