AKATHISIA
State of motor restlessness, sometimes produced by neruoleptic medication, that rangesfrom a feeling ofinner distress to an inability to sit still.
AKINESIA
Absence, loss or impairment of the power of voluntary movement.
ALOGIA
The inability to speak because of mental deficiency, mental confusion, or aphasia.
BIPOLAR DISORDER
An affective disorder characterized by periods of mania alternating with periods of depression.
CATATONIA
A syndrome seen most frequently in schizophrenia, characterized by muscular rigidity and mental stupor, sometimes alternating with great excitement and confusion.
DELUSION
A false belief or opinion, which are sometimes very grand. Such as "Delusions of Grandeur"
DEPRESSION
A condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawl; sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason.
ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY (ECT)
Aka electroshock is a well established and controversial psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in anesthetized patients for therapeutic effect.
FLATTENED AFFECT
A symptom of schizophrenia and some other psychiatric disorders in which the person expresses a very limied range of emotions, even in situations that normally seem very exciting or very sad.
HALLUCINATION
A sensory experience of something that does not exist outside of the mind, caused by various physical and mental disorders, or by reaction to certain toxic substances.: Auditory (most common) and visual (2nd most common) are typical manifestations.
HOPELESSNESS
Providing no hope; beyond optimism or hope, desperate.
HYPOMANIA
A mild state of mania, especially as a phase of manic-depressive cycle.
MANIA
Excessive excitemet or enthusiasm - craze.
MOOD DISORDER
An of a group of psychiatric disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder, characterized by a pervasive disturbance of mood that is not caused by an organic abnormality. Aka:Affective Disorder.
OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER
Human anxiety disorder characterized by invountary intrusive thoughts. When a sufferer begins to acknowledge these intrusive thoughts, the sufferer develops anxiety based on the dread that something bad will happen. The sufferer feels compelled to perform irrational, time consuming behaviors to diminish the anxiety.
POWERLESSNESS
Lacking strength or power; helpless and totally ineffectual.
PSYCHOSIS
Mental disorder characterized by symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impared contact with reality.
SCHIZOPHRENIA
Any of a group of psychotic disorders usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations , and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional, behavioral or intellectual disturbances. Schizophrenia is associated with dopamine imbalances in the brain and may have an underlying genetic cause.
TARDIVE DYSKINESIA
a disroder characterized by restlessness and involuntary rolling of the tongue, or twitching of the face, trunk, or limbs, usually occuring as a complication
UNIPOLAR DEPRESSION
A major depressive episodethat occurs without the manic phase that occurs in the classic form of bipolar disorder.
