Drive-Reducrion Theory *Part 1

•something motivates us to actions

•Clark Hull (1943) motivation comes from basic physical needs, if deprived ➡ becomes tense

Internal condition can change over time and orients an individual toward specific goals

Incentive Theory

Incentive- object we want we try to achieve thru motivated behavior (rewards/goals)


•sometimes drive is strong & incentive = weak. Sometimes drive is weak & incentive = strong

Cognitive Theory

•Extrinsic Motivation- engaging in activities to reduce biological needs & obtain incentives & external rewards


•Intrinsic Motivation- engaging in activities because they are personally rewarding because they fulfill our beliefs/expectations
