(Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride)Anti psychotic
Action: Blocks dopamine in the brain
On:30-60min Pk:Unk Dur:4-6h
Dose/Route: Initial 25-50 mg increasing to 400 mg daily.May be given IM for acute mania, oral therapy is preferred.
SE: Drowsiness, sedation,diziness,vertigo,headache,tachycardia,constipation,excess salivation,hyper glycemia->common cardiomyopathy, myocarditis,pulmonary embolism,cardiac arrest,leukopenia, agranulocytosis, granulocytopenia,resp. arrest->life threatening.
Contraindications: CV disease,seizures,hypovolemia,strenouos exercise,aspiration pneumonia,pregnancy
Interactions:Alcohol use(CNSdep)HTN meds(dec. BP) Benzo's(inc. sedation & resp. arrest)Bone marrow suppressants (inc. bone marrow toxicity) Digoxin/Warfarin(may inc. levels Phenytoin(inc/breakthru psychosis)
Action: Blocks dopamine receptors in the brain.

Dose/Route: Initial 0.5-5mg PO bid or tid MAX 100 mg PO daily
SE:Extrapyramidal reactions,tardive diskinesia->common seizures neuroleptic malignant syndrome,leukopenia ->life threatening (Sedation, drowsiness,lethargy,tachycardia,hypo/hypertension,blurred vision dry mouth anorexia N&V jaundice rash sweating)
Contraindications: Parkinson's,coma, CNS Depression
Interactions:Antifungals(inc. haldol level) lithium(lethargy&confusion( methyldopa (dementia) Rifampin(dec. haldol level) Alcohol (CNS Dep)
Anti Depressant
Action:potent inhibitor of monoamine oxidase
Dose/Route:Initial 15 mg tid increased to 60 mg Maintenance 15 qd or every other day
On:1-2hrs therapeutic levels 4wks
Side Effects: Dizziness, headache, drowsiness, sleep disturbances, fatigue, weakness, tremors, twitching, myoclonic movements, hyperreflexia,
constipation, dry mouth, elevated serum transaminases,weight gain,postural hypotension, edema,Sexual disturbances,
Contraindications:SSRIs, CHF,renal impairment or renal disease, liver disease,abnormal liver function
Tri-Cyclic Antidepressants
Use: Treatment of various forms of depression often with psychotherapy.
Action: Inhibits neurotransmitters in the brain.
SE:HTN,tachycardia,convulsions if used with MAOIs,dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, unpleasant taste, headache, nausea, mild tiredness or weakness, increased appetite or craving for sweets, and weight gain-> common
blurred vision,eye pain,confusion,hallucinations,syncope,loss of balance,dysphagia,difficulty speaking,shakiness,restlessness,movement problems,decreased sexual ability,irregular heartbeat,constipation,problems urinating-> life threatening
(Lithium Citrate)
CNS Drug
Action: Controls mania, alters chemical transmitters competes w/Na+ ions
Route/Dose: 300-600 mg po up qid increase dosage based on blood levels (1-1.5 meq/L for mania,0.6-1.2meq/l maintenance) 5 ml lith. Citrate contains 8meq lithium=300mg

Side Effects: tremors,drowsiness,headaches confusion,restlessness,psychomotor ret.,lethargy,coma,fatigue,ataxia,arryhthmias, hypotension,bradycardia,tinnitus,blurred vision,dry mouth,N&V, anorexia, diarrhea,thirst, ABD pain,gas,polyuria,albuminuria,renal toxicity,goiter,hypothyroidism,hyponatremia,muscle weakness, pruritus,rash,alopecia, acne,ankle&wrist edema.
Contraindications:pregnancy,diuretics,seizures,cv disease,dehydration,infection,renal disease
Use: Treatment of chronic psychoses
Action: block dopamine receptors in brain,alter dopamine release and turnover
SE:Extrapyramidal reactions include acute dystonias, akathisia, parkinsonism (rigidity and tremor), neuroleptic malignant syndrome,tardive dyskinesia, tachycardia, hypotension, impotence, lethargy, seizures, and hyperprolactinaemia.
Action: Binds to dopaminergic receptors in the CNS. May interfere with adrenergic,cholinergic,histaminergic&serotonergic receptors
Route/Dose:Initial 12.5 mg PO qd increase 25-50 as tolerated. most need 200-600 qd some need 900 qd MAX 900 mg qd
On:Unk Pk:2.5hr Dur: 4-12 hr
SE:drowsiness,sedation,seizures,dizziness, syncope,vertigo,headache,nightmares,restlessness,confusion, slurred speech,depression,anxiety,fever,tachycardia,hypotension,chest pain,cardiac arrrest,visual disturbance,dry mouth, contipation,N&V,diarrhea,excess salivation,urinary frequency, incontinence, weight gain, hyperglycemia,muscle pain/spasm,resp. arrest,rash,diaphoresis.
Contraindications: Epilepsy,CNS depression,bone marrow suppression,angle closure glaucoma
(chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride)
Action:benzodiazepine that may depress CNS and stop seizure activity.
Route/Dose:anxiety(5-10mg PO bid or 20-25mg PO tid for severe anxiety

(fluoxetine hydrochloride)
Use: To treat depression, OCD, bulimia, Bipolar disorder, alcohol dependence, anorexia nervosa
Action: Thought to be linked to drug’s inhibition of CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin.
On: Unk Pk: 6-8 hr Dur:Unk
SE: nervousness, somnolence, anxiety, insomnia, headache, drowsiness, fatigue,tremor, dizziness, asthenia, fever, suicidal behavior, palpitations, nasal congestion, pharyngitis, N&V, diarrhea,dry mouth,anorexia,dyspepsia,constipation,ABD pain,gas,increased appetite, sexual dysfunction,wt. loss,muscle pain,Upper resp inf., cough, resp. distress, rash, pruritus, diaphoresis, flulike sx.
Contraindications:MAOIs within 14 days, high risk suicide, diabetes, seizures, mania,liver, renal & CV disease, pregnancy
(tacrine hydrochloride)
CNS Drug
Use: used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Dementia
Action: Reversibly inhibits cholinesterase in the CNS, blocking the breakdown of acetylcholine temporarily improving cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer’s

SE: agitation, ataxia, insomnia,somnolence, depression, anxiety, headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, chest pain, rhinitis, N&V, diarrhea, dyspepsia, loose stools, anorexia, ABD pain, gas, constipation, liver toxicity, wt. loss, myalgia, Upper Resp. Inf., cough, rash, jaundice, facial flushing
Contraindications: Patients with previous history of cognex induced jaundice, bili level above 3mg/dL, bradycardia,PUD, hepatic disease,Renal disease, asthma,urine outflow impairment
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
Use: class of antidepressants used to treatment depression, anxiety disorders, and some personality disorders.
Action: SSRIs increase the levels of serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor.
SE:drowsiness, somnolence, headache, clenching of teeth, extremely vivid and strange dreams, dizziness, changes in appetite,weight loss/gain, risk of bone fractures and injuries, change in sexual activity, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, tremors, liver & renal impairment, suicidal ideations, diaphoresis, orthostatic hypotension, N&V, diarrhea
Use:antipsychotic drug used in the treatment of schizophrenia and psychosis.
Action:Blocks dopamine in the brain and has minor anticholinergic blocking activity.
SE: tardive diskinesia, sedation, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, increased appetite, urine retention, menstrual irregularity, sexual dysfunction, wt. gain, agranulocytosis, jaundice, mild photosensitivity, gynecomastia
Contraindications: Cardiac Disease, liver disease, resp. disorders, ECT, reactions to insulin, extreme Wx esposure.
(citalopram hydrobromide)
Anti-Depressant SSRI
Use: To treat depression
Action: Inhibits neuronal uptake of serotonin
SE:Decreased sexual desire or ability; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; increased sweating; lightheadedness when you stand or sit up; loss of appetite; nausea; stuffy nose; tiredness;absent menstrual period; bizarre behavior; black or bloody stools; chest pain; confusion; decreased concentration; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; memory loss; new or worsening agitation, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated feeling of well-being, restlessness, or inability to sit still; persistent, painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe or persistent anxiety or trouble sleeping; stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual or severe mental or mood changes; vision changes; worsening of depression
(paroxetine hydrochloride)
AntiDepressant SSRI
Use:Used to treat major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (PD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Action:prevent reuptake of serotonin in the brain
SE:Somnolence, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, parathesia,headache, palpitations, orthostatic hypotension, lump in throat, dry mouth, N&V, constipation, dyspepsia,sexual dysfunction, urinary frequency, ABD pain, gas, inc/dec appetite, rash, pruritus, diaphoresis, cough

(Sertraline hydrochloride)
AntiDepressant SSRI
Use: used to treat depression, OCD, PD, PTSD, PDD, Social Anxiety, Premature Ejaculation
Action: Inhibits reuptake of serotonin
SE: headache, SI, tremor, dizziness,insomnia,somnolence, parasthesia, fatigue, nervousness, anxiety, agitation, twitching, confusion, palpitations, chest pain, hot flashes, dry mouth, diarrhea, N&V,loose stools, constipation, ABD pain, inc. appetite, wt. gain, male sexual dysfunction, rash pruritus,diaphoresis
Contraindications:MAOI therapy, Suicide risk, seizure disorder, major affective disorder, diseases that affect metabolism,3rd tri. pregnancy
(bupropion hydrochloride)
Anti Depressant
Use: to treat depression
Action: does not inhibit MAO but weakly inhibits norepi,dopamine,serotonin noradrenergic mechanism may cause drugs effect.
SE: fever,headache, seizures, anxiety, confusion, delusions, hostility, insomnia, seadtion tremor, agitation, akinesia, syncope, SI, HTN,hypotension, palpitations,tachycardia, arrhythmias,chest pain,auditory disturbance, epistaxis, blurred vision, N&V, anorexia, dry mouth, taste disturbance, constipation, ABD pain, diarrhea, wt. loss/gain, arthritis, muscle spasm, twitch, cough, upper Resp. Inf, pruritus, rash, excess sweating, fever/chills, cutaneous temp disturbance
Contraindications: MAOI therapy, hx of seizure, bulemia, anorexia, use with Zyban ETOH withdrawal, hx of MI heart/renal/liver impairment
(quetiapine fumarate)
Use: to manage sx of psychotic disorders,short term tx of bipolar disorder
Action:Blocks dopamine receptors in the brain
SE: dizziness, headache, somnolence, seizure, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, wt.gain
Contraindications: CV disease,cerebrovascular disease, conditions that cause hypotension, hx of seizure, conditions that raise core body temp., pt with risk of aspiration pneumonia.
Use: sshort term treatment of schizophrenia, to delay relapse in schizophrenia, combotherapy for acute mania bipolar disorder
