Instinct theory

tries to explain why humans do things but it fails to explain most human motives

Drive Reduction Theory

- dominates our behaviors

Things we do to get rid of "the itch"

We drink when we are thirsty, we eat when we are hungry

Goes along with homeostasis, or that balanced state in your body

Hedonistic Theory

We seek out the pleasurable and we avoid the pain; we seek optimal levels of arousal and we are like machines

Maslow

What we need, 5 levels:

Physiological - we need these first before we get anything else (food, water, sex, sleep)

Safety - security of body, employment, resources, morality

Love/belonging - friendship, family, sexual intimacy

Esteem - self-esteem, self-confidence, respect for others

Self-actualization - morality, creativity, problem solving, lack of prejudice

There are holes in this, people will jump levels all the time

Ex) man who sacrifices himself to save others after a plane crash, he sough after others before himself

Hunger

If we do not have stomachs, we are still hungry, there is still a drive in the brain to eat that still "feels" hunger

This drive is hardwired into our brains

Obesity:

Obesity: weight thermostat - our body is always trying to get back to that set point, but maybe in the brain (genetics) cause more of the obesity issue

Obese people are less likely to get jobs

Obese women have less chance of getting a job compared to obese men

Sex

4 stages:

Excitement - aroused state

Plateau - peak excitement

Orgasm - contractions all over body

Resolution - men cannot achieve orgasm again for a set period of time

Arousal

Men's amygdala is firing off more in the brain than women when it comes to sex - the amygdala is associated with emotions

Pregnancy

American teens have way more pregnancy

Why?

Not as much education as needed is given, parents feel awkward about talking about it

Also goes along with idea of invulnerability - teens think they are invincible

Minimal communication leads to mistaken ideas about pregnancy and the vulnerability to it - when parents don’t talk about it, that makes things worse

Guilt = less use of contraceptive

Alcohol - obvious

Media - you never hear talk of condoms

Erotic Plasticity

Women are way more open to bisexual attractions

A high sex drive among men is associated with an increased attraction to women

A high sex drive among women is associated with an increased attraction to BOTH men and women

Homosexuality

Is it nature or nurture?

Science says it is more nature and biological

Those that accept it as such^^ are more accepting of homosexuality

Ostracism

- leaving someone out; THIS IS A BAD THING

Physical and emotional pain are one in the same when it comes to ostracism; the exact same part of the brain lights up!!

We are all sociable by nature, we like to feel ties with people, and when we are ostracized it leads to illness, suicide, mental disorders, etc.

Facebook and "likes" - your Facebook profile reflects your personality

Motivation at Work

A job - a way to pay the bills

Work or career - way to advance from one position to a better position

A calling - a fulfilling and socially useful activity

These people find the most satisfaction from their work

Flow

You get in to something and you get so in to it that you lose track of time

Focused sate of consciousness with a diminished awareness of time and space resulting in an optimum state of skill

You do your best work in this state!

It is not always a good thing

Ex) binge watching TV shows

Achievement Motivation

Desire for significant accomplishment - it is what drives us in life, our passion to succeed, allows us to get in to a state of flow more often

When you do a
