Health psychology
studies stress related aspects of disease.
What type of attitudes will help us not get sick?
How stressful do we perceive a situation?
Definition of stress - Effects of stress on the immune system
def: a circumstance (real or perceive) that threatens a person's well-being
*Prolonged stress can cause illness and death
*Plus an increased risk for: heart disease, cancer, strokes, and chronic lung disease.
The immune system - Lymphocytes, Macrophages
Lymphocytes: fight bacteria infections, and attack cancer cells and viruses.
Macrophages: ingest foreign substances.
Effects of AIDS on the immune system
stress and negative emotions may accelerate the progression from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
(reduction of stress may help with the spreading and killing of aids)
Conditioning and the immune system
the immune system can be suppressed through conditioning.
After Ader amd Cohen associated sweetended water with a drug that causes immune suppression in rats, the inert substance alone triggered the conditioned immune response.
What are the effects of aerobic exercise?
many studies suggested that aerobic exercise raises energy, increses self-confidence, and lowers tension, depression, and anxiety.
General Adaption Syndrome - Three phases
Selye's concept of the body's adaptive response to stress in 3 stages: 1)alarm 2)resistance 3)exhaustion
How does loss of perceived control affect health?
research with rats and humans indicates that the absence of control over stressors is a predictor of health problems.
If 2 rats receive shocks, but one can stop them, the helplessness rat becomes more susceptible to ulcers and lowered immunity to disease.
Elderly who have little perceived control die sooner.
Type A and B personalities
type A: most reactive, competitive, hard driving, impatient, time-conscious, super motivated, verbally aggressive and easily angered.
type B: easy going, relaxed people.
(type A suffered the most heart attacks)
What is a psychophysiological illness?
it is any stress related physical illness as hypertention or headaches.
