Specific Phobia
excessive fear of object/situation
immediate anxiety response upon exposer to feared object
avoided or endured with intense distress

often have more than one phobia, fear of flying most common phobia that receives treatment, evolutionary in origin
Social Phobia (Eating, Speaking, Writing, Restroom, Generalized)
Fear of social or performance situations (1 or more).

mostly occurs in adolescence b/c more self conscious, more prevalent in girls, alcohol reduces anxiety
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
obsessions - can't get mind of things
compulsions - behaviors/actions one has to do repeatedly; serve to reduce anxiety

kids often involve family in rituals, more common in boys, comorbid with other anxiety disorders, disruptive behaviors.
common onset =9-12
early onset=6-10 (tends to only be compulsions)
Panic Disorder
Panic Attacks for a period of 1 month out of the blue, lasts no more than 10 minutes
worried about another attack
with or without agoraphobia

might avoid a lot of situations
most common in adolescent females
onset = 15-19
disorder with lowest rate of remission
Post Traumatic Stress Disoder
Atypical event
re-experiencing event through nightmares/flashbacks
avoidance of associated stimuli, arousal symptoms

greater in children exposed to life threatening events
correlated strongly with degree of exposure

treatment: effective only if exposed to feared stimuli
