Working memory used to be call this
Short term memory
2 factors in Raven's Progressive Matrices
Storage and Processing
Raven's Progressive Matrices description
presents a person with 9 slots for shapes and figures in matrix form that has 1 of the 9 slots missing. The person then has to choose the option that completes the matrix. To do this test, a person needs to figure out the pattern in the matrices, look for certain features while holding on to these features in storage, while processing what comes next.

REQUIRES working memory...storage and then processing
Mental arithmetic uses two things
Both long term AND working memory
Two processes of working memory
executive processes and storage buffer
Digit span
highest number of digits subject can repeat back without error..indication of how much can hold onto in memory
Reading span
highest number of words subject can repeat back without effor
Operation span
Read simple math problems and words: (8/4) + 2 = 4? BIRD

After 2 to 6 pairs, subject must recall the final words in order..Span=number of items perfectly recalled in order
Tower of Hanoi and what is requires
Requires W.M, problem solving, goal management...Raven's performance correlation with Tower of Hanoi: .77
Correlations of WM and Raven's score
1. Raven's scores worse for old people
2. Raven's better if WM is good
3. WM scores worse for older people

Raven's gets worse because WM gets worse..for old and young people with the same WM score, Raven's score is the same..holding Raven's constant
WM and reading comprehension
People with high working memory spans have better comprehension of text.."There is a sewer near our home who makes terrific suits."

Better able to hold on a bunch of info to comprehend
Interferences in reasoning
Will do poorly at Syllogisms if also generating numbers (WM task)..WM task interferes with reasoning
Sector of brain that deals with memory
Hippocampus
Why patient H.M. has anterograde amnesia
Neurosurgeons wanted to try to relieve severe epilepsy by taking out portion of temporal lobe for seizures
Patient H.M. and who are similar
guy from Memento
Patient H.M. with regard to Long term and working memory
Impaired long term memory
Normal working memory
Patient K.F. with regard to LTM and WM
Normal Long term memory
Impaired Working memory
Comparing patient H.M. and K.F. do what...
double dissociation!
Double dissociation formula
Single dissociation 1 + Single Dissociation 2 = Double Dissociation
Serial position curve
Listen to 15 (or x) words
Write them down in any order
Results of serial position curve
people tend to remember beginning at the end of the list
If give delay on serial position curve before listing the words
Recency effect goes down because it takes away from Working Memory

Counting backwards while hearing the words list also ruins the recency effect/Working memory
Serial position curve with slowing down rate of presenting words
Recall performance for the first couple of names at the beginning of the list would improve with slowing down the rate of presentations of names. Slowing down the rate of presentation would give more time to encode the names into long term memory. However, this would not affect the names at the end of the list in the same way. Regardless of rate, Professor would remember the names at the end with working memory. The rate of presentation has no affect on working memory because Professor would still remember the last couple names at the end based on recency.
