CT scan
computerized tomography scan; computer enhanced Xray of brain STRUCTURE; radioactive; shows slices; cheaper than MRIs
MRIs
magnetic resonance imaging scan; uses magnetic fields and radio wavves to map out brain STRUCTURE; much better resolution than CT scans, 3D but more expensive; not radioactive!
PET scan
positron emission tomography scans; use radioactive markers (glucose) to map chemical activity in brain, studies FUNCTION;
fMRI
functional magnetic resonance imaging; monitor blood flow and oxygen consumption; map activity and FUNCTION in the brain but also STRUCTURE; not as good resolution as MRI
TMS
transcranial magnetic stimulation; uses magnets to excite neurons in certain parts of the brain to learn about function in the brain; noninvasive
lesioning
destroying a piece of the brain to study its function. may damage something on the way down. hard to interpret
electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB)
sending a weak electric current into a brain structure to stimulate it; invasive
studying brain damaged peopel
cannot manipulate brain
confounding variables
aspiration
sucking out parts of the brain like a vacuum?
