Abnormal Behavior

Patterns of behaviors, thoughts or emotions considered pathological for one or more of five reasons: deviance, dysfunction, distress, danger or statistical infrequency

Deviance

Behaviors, thoughts that maybe abnormal when they differ from a society or cultures norms or values. Ex: believing others are plotting against you

Dysfunction

Behaviors, thoughts that interfere with daily functioning may be considered abnormal. They may not be able to take care of themselves, or get along with others. Ex: unable to go to work due to alcohol abuse

Distress

Thoughts or behaviors that cause personal distress may qualify as abnormal. Ex: OCD, suicidal thoughts

Danger

Exhibits behaviors, thoughts that indicate potential danger to themselves or others. Ex. Fighting with strangers

Statistical Infrequency

Of normal distribution, one end to the other end of the spectrum

Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorder ( DSM-IV-TR)

Classification system developed by the APA used to describe abnormal behaviors.

Disorder symptoms that are found across cultures. Ex: nervous, worry

Culture bound

Behavior is abnormal only by specific cultures.

Anxiety Disorder

Overwhelming apprehension and fear accompanied by autonomic nervous system arousal.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Persistent, uncontrollable and free floating non specified anxiety. Unknown, lasts at least 6 months. Muscles tension, headaches, insomnia
