Abnormal Behavior
People who act strangely or report bizarre thoughts or emotions.
Medical Model
The conceptualization of psychological abnormalities as diseases that like physical diseases, have biological causes, defined symptoms, and possible cures.
Diathesis-stress Model
A model suggesting that a person may be predisposed for a mental disorder that remains unexpressed until trigged by stress.
When is behavior disordered?
Any of various forms of behavior that are considered inappropriate by members of the social group to which an individual belongs.
Insanity
(links external) mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior
Anxiety Disorders
Mental disorders in which anxiety Is the predominant feature.
Types of anxiety disorders
Panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder.
Panic disorder
people with this condition have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning.
Characteristics of Panic disorders
Panic attack, sweating, chest pain, and a feeling of choking.
Generalized anxiety disorder
A disorder characterized by chronic excessive worry accompanied by three or more f the following symptoms: restlessness, fatigue, concentration, problems, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance.
Specific Phobia
A disorder that involves an irrational fear of a particular object or situation that markedly interferes with an individual's ability to function.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
A disorder in which repetitive intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and ritualistic behavior interfere significantly with an individual's functioning.
PTSD
A disorder that occurs among survivors of severe environmental stress such as a tornado, an airplane crash, or military combat.
Anorexia
an eating disorder usually occurring in adolescent females, characterized by refusal to maintain a normal minimal body weight, fear of gaining weight or becoming obese, disturbance of body image, undue reliance on body weight or shape for self-evaluation, and amenorrhea.
Bulimia
episodic binge eating followed by feeling of shame, depression, and self-condemnation.
Mood disorders
A disorder characterized by a severely depressed mood that lasts 2 weeks and is accompanied by feelings of worthlessness and lack of pleasure, lethargy, and sleep and appetite disturbances.
Bipolar disorder
an unstable emotional condition characterized by cycles of abnormal, persistent high mood (mania) and low mood ( depression)
Schizophrenia
A disorder characterized by the profound disruption of basic psychological processes; a distorted perception of reality altered or blunted emotion; and disturbances in thought, motivation, and behavior.
