Active PFC (active power factor correction)
Circuitry built into the PSU that reduces harmonics.

AC (alternating current)
Electron flow alternates back and forth in a circuit.

Amperage or current
Measurement of electrons that flow past a certain point in a wire. Measured in amperes.

Amps or A (amperes)
Unit of measurement for electrical current.

DC (direct current)
Electrons flow in one direction around a continuous circuit.

Dual-voltage
PSUs equipped with a ~115/~230 switch. (110V-220V).

FRU (field replacement unit)
Typical replacement parts a tech should carry.

IEC-320
Standard power connector for PSUs. ~115 V.

Joule
A unit of electrical energy. Measurement that a surge suppressor can absorb.

Mini connector
Supplies 5-V and 12-V to peripherals usually floppy DDs.

Molex connector
Supplies 5-V and 12-V current for fans and older drives. Keyed to prevent improper insertion.

Multimeter
VOM (volt-ohm meter) or DMM (digital multimeter). Can measure various aspects of voltage, amperage, and resistance.

Multi-rail
PSU configuration where current is split into multiple pathways. Each pathway receives it’s own OCP (over-current protection). 2 rail version is known as dual rail.

Ω (ohms)
Measurement of resistance (impedance).

P1 power connector
20- or 24-pin connector used for the ATX mobo.

P4 power connector
Additional 12V power supply to the mobo. Pentium 4 and later.

PCIe 6/8 pin power connector
PSU connector for dedicated graphics cards.

Power conditioning
Used to adjust AC power to standard prevent line noise such as EMI and RFI.

Power supply fan
Provides basic cooling for the PC.

PSU (power supply unit)
Converts AC power to DC into various voltages.

Rails
Separate DC voltage paths that lead to all connectors within an ATX PSU.

Resistance
Difficulty electricity has traveling through a medium. Measured in Ω.

SATA power connector
Serialized ATA, 15 pin, hot-swappable, thinner keyed cables for 3.3V(not currently implemented), 5.0V, and 12.0V devices.

Single rail
All power is supplied on a single pathway. Single OCP (over-current protection) monitors all the pathways.

Slot covers
Used to cover empty expansion bays and maintain proper airflow.

Soft power
Not an actual power switch. Used with ATX mobos. Can be configured in BIOS or OS.

Surge suppressor
Device that protects the PC from voltage spikes.

UPS (uninterruptible power supply)
Contains a battery and protects the PC in the event of power sag or power outage.

V (volts)
Measurement of pressure of electrons in a wire.

Watts or W (wattage)
The amount of amps and volts a device needs to function. V x A = W.
