What are the goals of protective behavior?
Protect the health and safety of participants, protect the reputations and careers of service providers, Respond appropriately when you suspect abuse or potential abuse.
What is the importance of protective behaviors?
Persons with disabilities are more likely than others to be targets for abuse. Service providers are required to report suspected abuse. Service providers can help prevent abuse.
How do you prevent physical abuse?
Use constructive positive discipline techniques. Hace water available during physical actitivy. Assit with activities of daily living as needed to make certain person in comfortable and safe.

Treat participants with courtesy and respect.
How do you prevent sexual abuse?
At least two adults should be present for activities such as changing, using the restroom, or showering. When speaking privately with a participant, stay within sight-distance of other participants you are supervising. you sports hugs, hugs with participant should be open to observation.

be alert to potential neglect and report to authorities. neglect occurs when caregiver withhold clothing, shelter, medical care, and other necessities.
What are the physical indicators of abuse?
Unexplained bruised, burns or lacerations, injuries to the genital areas, injuries in areas usually covered by clothing.
How should you respond if you find a physical indicator?
Ask how the injury happened, consider if the incident described by the participant could have caused the injury.
What are the behavior indicators of abuse?
Aggression, Depression, regression, difficulty walking or sitting due to pain from injury, sexualized behavior, avoiding a particular person.
What are some more behavior indicators of abuse?
Withdrawal, sleep disturbances, sucidal thoughts or actions, habit disorders such as head-banging, rocking, thumb sucking, being overly complaint. Appearing extremely fearful or apprehensive, indiscriminate friendliness.
What are some guidelines of abuse disclosure to participants?
Be respectful, understand that very few allegations of sexual abuse are false, think before acting, allow story to be told, get basics (opened ended questions), respect privacy, let participant know its okay to tell.
How do you report suspect abuse?
Tell the boss, contact the authorities.
