3) which expresses PURPOSE and demands of the covenant - God is taking this story somewhere and the people should respond in faith
Date of Nahum's ministry
The book was written after 663 since it mentions the capture of No-Amon
[Thebes] in Egypt by Asshurbanipal; and it comes before 612 since it looks
ahead to the fall of Nineveh

How does Nahum relate to Jonah
More than a century has lapsed

Jonah's message was a conditional - Nahum's was unconditional (cat. 2). It was a message to Judah about her enemies... it applies to individuals and it applies to nations, especially nations that oppress God’s chosen people!
Internal conditions during Nahum, Zeph and Habakkuk
The long reign of the wicked king Manasseh brought religious oppression, social injustices, wickedness greater than Canaanites

A period of revival under Josiah (at first a boy-king) which also involved political & religious independence from a weakening Assyria (Assyrian weakening began ca. 633, finished ca. 628).

Further reform took place after 622 (height of reform) when the book of the law was rediscovered... the revival was cut short by the death of Josiah in 609
What were the main 7th century prophets?
Nahum, Zephaniah, Habakkuk
