data
observations (such as measurements, genders, survey responses) that have been collected
statistics
a collection of methods for planning experiements obtaining data and then organizing , summarizing, presenting analyzing, interpretying and drawing conclusions based on the data
population
is the complete collection of all elements (scores people, measurements and so on) to be studied. The collection is complete in the sense that it incluseds all subjects to be studied
census
is the collection of data from every member of the population
sample
a subcollection of members selected from a population
parameter
a numerical measurement describing some characteristics of a population
statistic
a numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a sample
Quantitative data
consists of numbers representing counts or measurements
Qualitative Data
can be seperated into different categories that are distinguished by some nonumerical characteristic
discrete data
result when the # of possible values is either a finite number or "countable"
continuous data
result from infinitely many possible values that correspond to some continuous scale that covers a range of values w/out gaps, interruptions or jumps
Nominal LOM
characterized by data that consist of names, labels, or categories only. Can't be arranged in an ordering scheme (low to high, etc)
Ordinal LOM
data at this level of measurement can be arranged in some order, but differences between data values can't be determined or are meaningless
Interval LOM
like the ordinal level, with the additional property that the difference between any two data values is meaningful. However, data at this level do not have a natural zero starting point (where none of the quanity is present)
Ratio LOM
the interval level w/ the additional property that there is also a natural zero starting point (where zero indicates that none of the quanity is present) For values at this level, differences and ratios are both meaningful
