Acoustic Interface
the boundary where sound waves hit the surface of the tissue
Attenuation
a decrease in intensity as beam travels through a medium. Acts to reduce the beam intensity of amplitude as the beam travels along its path. (units are dB)
-dependent on depth of penetration, frequency of beam, and attenuation coefficient.
Power
a measure of the total energy transmitted summed over the entire cross-sectional area of the beam per unit time (intensity multiplied by area). (Units are Watts or Joules/sec)
Intensity
physical parameter that describes the amount of energy flowing through a unit cross-sectional area of a beam each second. This is the rate at which the wave transmits the energy over a small area. (unit is the Watt per square cm or joule per second per square cm)
Energy
the ability of a system to do work
Amplitude
particle displacement, particle velocity, or acoustic pressure of a sound wave. Also indicates the strength of the detected echo or the voltage induced in a crystal by a pressure wave.
Diffraction
The spreading out of the beam that results from the beam passing through a small aperture.
Decibel
used to quantify a variety of processes; intensity, power, amplitude, dynamic range, attenuation.
Depth of penetration
attenuation is dependent on it. (measured in cm)
Sensitivity
the overall ability of the system to detect weak-reflecting objects at a specific distance from the transducer.
