APA
- The governing body of the field of psychology in America.
- Was founded in 1892 by Stanley Hall.
- Its purpose is to "advance psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare."
American Psychology
- an index published by the APA. It is published and includes archival, current issue, theoretical, and practical articles from all areas of psychology.
Psychological Bulletin
- Is published bimonthly by the APA and includes various papers ranging from literature reviews to quantitative reviews.
Psychological Abstracts
- An index published by the APA, can be found at most major libraries.
- It is the monhtly compilation of "nonevaluative summaries of the world's literature in psychology."
- In each issue, the article abstracts are arranged by topic.

Primary Prevention
- Involves attempts to prevent documented psychosocial problems through direct contact with an at-risk (but thus far unaffected) group. The attempt to prevent problems is executed through proactive intervention, meaning that hte intervention takes place before the problems arise rather than as a result of the problems. Examples of such primary prevention programs are prenatal health care, D.A.R.E. and Head Start.
Culturally Competent Interventions
- Interventions refer to treatment or prevention programs that recognize and are tailored to cultural differences.
- Therapists are beginning to be trained in CULTURAL COMPETENCE, which means that they learn the language, customs, and norms of the various cultures they serve. This minimizes Eurocentric bias and assumptions and prevents individuals from having to constantly explain their culture.
Community Psychology
- Is a model in which psychology is taken into the community via community centers or schools, as opposed to having individuals come to clinics and universities.
- Community psychology emphasizes respect and also recognizes the logistics tha keep the neediest people from seeking help.
