What is Density?
Mass per unit volume.
It is the measure of the compactness of a substance. The mass to how much space it takes up. |
What is the equation for density?
Density = mass/ volume
The letter for density looks like a p but it isn't |
What are the units of Density?
g/cm 3 or kg/cm 3
1kg/cm3 = 1000 g/cm3 |
What does density depend on?
What it's made of (NOT SIZE OR SHAPE)
What does the average density of an object do?
Determines whether is sinks or floats!
How can you work out the volume of an oddly shaped object?
Use a displacement can or measuring container . Look for volume of displaced or rise in volume.
What is pressure?
Force per unit area. It is a measure of the force being applied to the surface of something.
How much force applied to something in Newtons! |
What are the units of measure for pressure?
N/m2 or pascals (Pa)/ kilopascals (kPa)
what's the equation for pressure?
pressure = force / area
p = FA |
So what happens if same force is applied over larger area?
Lower pressure
How does pressure act in gases and liquids?
The pressure at any point acts equally in all directions.
Pressure increases with depth. |
What is pressure difference?
The difference between two points in a liquid or gas
What does pressure difference depend on?
height difference (m) and density (kg/m3) of substance. Gravity has an effect too (10m/s2).
Pressure diff = height (m) x density (kg/m3) x g (N/kg) |
Find the pressure difference between the top and bottom of a 3m vertical column of water. Density of water is 1 g/cm3.
p diff = height (m) x density (kg/m3) x g (N/kg)
so density of 1 g/cm3 in kg/m3 = 1 /100 * (100 * 100 * 100) = 1000kg/m3 p diff = 3 x 1000 x 10 = 30000 Pa (N/m2) |
