Thrust

The total force acting in a normal direction over a given surface.

Pressure

The thrust acting per unit area of the surface is called pressure. It is a Scalar quantity. this word should only be used for the force acting Normally (thrust). Force acting at an angle does not exert pressure on the surface. The S.I unit is Newton per square metre (Nm-2)

Pascals Law

The pressure exerted at any point in an enclosed liquid is transmitted equally in all directions. It was discovered by the french Scientist, Blaise Pascal. It is used in Hydraulic Brakes and Hydraulic Press.

Manometer

It is used to measure pressure. It is a glass "U" tube mounted against a scale on a vertical board. the "U" tube contains a suitable liquid like coloured water or mercury. One end of the tube is open while the other is connected to a rubber tube. a Thistle funnel, with a rubber membrane stretched across its wider mouth, is attached to the tube.

Barometer

It is an instrument that measures the pressure of the atmoshpere. The base principle is to use atmospheric pressure to balance a vertical column of mercury sealed at the top. this word was coined by Robert Boyle and first appeared in print in 1665.

Aneroid Barometer

Aneroid means without liquid and it was invented by another italian scientist, Lucas Vidie, in 1843. It measures the effect of air pressure on a corrugated metal chamber from which part of the air has been removed. The changes in air pressure make the chamber expand or contract and the corrugated surface provides flexibility. It is used as an altimeter. And altimeter is a device that enables height readings.
