-increased level of participation by ordinary voters: 30% in 2008 -incr. level of interest: e.g. in Democratic race 2008 -incr. choice of candidates: 14 in 2008 -opening up the process to 'outsider' candidates: Bill Clinton (92) Obama (08) -removing power of party bosses -diminishing opportunities for corruption |

Primary disadvantages |
-turnout is usually low: 28.5% eligible voters 2016 -voters are unrepresentative of typical general election voters: more elderly, more ideological, better educated, more wealthy -makes the process far too long, which discourage some better qualified candidates -too expensive and media orientated -bitter personal battles can develop -formal functions aren't real |
