Front loading =

where states schedule their presidential primaries/caucuses earlier in the cycle in an attempt to increase their importance in the choosing of candidates, trying to make their primary more prominent and influential

Super Tuesday =

A day often in early feb when a large number of states hold their primaries or caucuses

Front loading - by 5th Feb 2008

-55% delegates to the Democratic & Republican conventions had already been chosen


-but rule changes by the Republicans in 2012 meant only 30 states held their's by end of March

Primary advantages

-increased level of participation by ordinary voters: 30% in 2008


-incr. level of interest: e.g. in Democratic race 2008


-incr. choice of candidates: 14 in 2008


-opening up the process to 'outsider' candidates: Bill Clinton (92) Obama (08)


-removing power of party bosses


-diminishing opportunities for corruption

Primary disadvantages

-turnout is usually low: 28.5% eligible voters 2016


-voters are unrepresentative of typical general election voters: more elderly, more ideological, better educated, more wealthy


-makes the process far too long, which discourage some better qualified candidates


-too expensive and media orientated


-bitter personal battles can develop


-formal functions aren't real
