Polk wanted to take over Texas. After Polk won, President Taylor decided to annex Texax ( to make it part of USA)
What happened with California/New Mexico?
Sent Sidell to Mexico City to buy them- they said no! So then he started a fight and sending troops to the disputed area... Mexican-American War (1846-8)
Evaluate Polk's role in bringing about scetional tension:
Caused serious sectional tension (Wilmot Proviso, Calhoun Doctorine, struggle for Compromise). Polk caused tension by annexing Texas Texas and not fighting for Oregon, resulting in the Wilmot Proviso.
