How far back was the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) time period? What characterized this period?

It extends roughly two million years ago in east central Africa. Early humanoids made crude stone cutting tools. Some examples are mammoth ivory carvings primitive sculptures and cave paintings.

They are rock carvings made from by scratching or pecking the surface of exposed stone. A famous example found in Australia is the Murujuga Petroglyphs that depicts animals humans and mythic beings.

Marks the transition from nomadic hunters and food gatherers to village and farmers and herders. This shifted humans to relatively more stable communities and gave rise to early architecture.
